Health and Safety Training
Understand workplace health and safety regulations, employer responsibilities, and the specialist training required for care and support roles.

The standard dictionary definition for Health and Safety are regulations and procedures that intend to prevent an accident or injury in a workplace or public environment.
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 – sets out how employers, employees and the self-employed must work in a safe way, giving every person on the work premises legal duties and responsibilities. As this act is very general, subject-specific 'regulations' have also been put in place to help every workplace to be safe.
Most employers have a health and safety policy which sets out how they will protect everyone who is affected by their business, including employees, visitors, contractors, and individuals who access services. Even if your role involves working in the private homes of individuals you need to know what health and safety legislation applies there. Ask your manager about policies that are in place to support your health, safety, and wellbeing in all the places in which you work. What all policies and procedures have in common is to tell everyone how to do something or what must be in place to make sure all people are safe.

There are many health & safety responsibilities. That includes Providing a safe place for staff to work – free from work-related violence and aggression. Giving employees health & safety training on moving and handling, equipment safety and more. Producing written health & safety procedures, such as policies on fire safety in health & social care. And meeting a range of guidelines affecting health & safety in care homes, such as those set out by the CQC in England, HIS in Scotland and HIW in Wales.
There are several activities that must not be carried out until appropriate specialist training has been completed. This training usually includes practical instruction and assessment delivered by a competent and qualified trainer to ensure safety, compliance, and confidence in the workplace.
These activities include:
Use of equipment (hoists and lifts)
Specialist training is required to safely use equipment such as hoists and lifts to move people or objects. Each piece of equipment has specific instructions for safe operation, and incorrect use can result in serious injury.
Medication handling
Medication is strictly regulated by legislation and guidance covering the prescribing, dispensing, administration, storage, and disposal of medicines. Only trained individuals should handle medication to ensure safety and compliance.
Moving and handling
Assisting and moving individuals requires proper training to prevent injury to both the worker and the individual. Safe moving and handling techniques are essential in health and social care environments.
First aid
First aid is the immediate assistance given to someone who is injured or taken ill before qualified medical help arrives. If you have not received first aid training, you should seek help from a qualified first aider or call emergency services. Attempting first aid without training may worsen the situation. However, all staff should understand their basic life support responsibilities in line with Care Certificate Standard 12.
Emergency procedures
Training is required to respond effectively to emergencies such as fire, explosion, flooding, or building damage, ensuring the safety of individuals, staff, and the workplace.
Food handling and preparation
Food safety training is essential to ensure food is prepared hygienically and safely, reducing the risk of contamination and food poisoning.
