BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business

Overview

This is a two year course in business and is the equivalent of two A Levels. It is designed so that by the end of Year 1, you will have achieved a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business, which is the equivalent of one A Level.

Additional Information

We will give you enrichment opportunities including visits and practical hands on, work-related experiences. You may also have the opportunity to develop your financial skills further by studying the Certificate in Financial Studies in Year 2  after successfully achieving a grade C or above in both GCSE English Language and Maths.

Activities include visits and case studies relating to real life businesses; students have previously visited Thorpe Park, London Zoo and Madam Tussauds. Future trips planned include Arsenal Football Stadium and the Coca Cola plant in Edmonton. Guest speakers are invited in to talk to students.

Learning Hours

180 to 240 guided learning hours

  • Formal Teaching: 60 to 80 Hours (Lecturing, Tutoring, seminars and/or workshops)
  • Directed Learning: 60 to 80 Hours (Discussion, Group Study, Advanced Reading, Research)
  • Independent Learning: 60 to 80 hours (Extended research, working through core texts, preparing assignments)

Mandatory Units

You will develop practical skills and a theoretical understanding of the world of business. You will complete projects investigating topics such as marketing, financial analysis, website design and retail strategies, for example. By the time you have completed the course you will have a good knowledge of the wide world of business and a practical skill set that will prepare you for the next stage in your business career.

During the course you will develop your group work, IT and presentation skills. The units you will study include elements of accounting, marketing, human resource management and website design. You will have a personal tutor who supports and guides you through the course. You will meet with your personal tutor for group meetings and for personal one to one meetings on a regular basis.

The course is currently 100% coursework and you will be assessed in a variety of ways – presentations, role plays and time-limited exercises.

Guidance Material

BIRD’s extended syllabus and study guideline include a list of books and journals for learners to should study on. Additionally, learners should collect BIRD’s specimen coursework and/or examination papers from their study centres. Registered learners can download these from BIRD Website after logging in.

Requirements

Four GCSEs at grades A*-C; GCSEs in English and Mathematics are required, one of which must be achieved at a minimum grade C and the other at a minimum grade D; or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business at Merit level plus GCSEs in English and Mathematics, one of which must be achieved at a minimum grade C and the other a minimum grade D (progressing students only). Plus satisfactory reference from last school or college.

Further Progression

Progression on to Year 2 of the course is dependent on successfully achieving the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Year 1 and having average attendance of 90% or higher. This course is all about preparing you for business and/or entry to university.  Future careers for you include accounting, banking, insurance, human resources, marketing and sales. In addition, we will prepare you for starting your own business or perhaps a career in e-business.
